Shaking Off the Shadow: A Chef's Approach to Somatic Exercises
-
Hey everyone, it's Dim_Salmon. As a chef in Burlington, I spend hours on my feet, but the real work happens internally. When I hit rock bottom in my 20s, I realized talk therapy alone wasn't enough to process the trauma. I needed to move the stuck energy out of the body. That's when somatic exercises became my lifeline.
I'm skeptical of gurus promising enlightenment in a weekend. I want results I can measure—less anxiety, better sleep, and a drop in physical tension. Somatic work is Inner Alchemy: transforming leaden stress into gold clarity through nervous system mechanics, not magic.
How to do it (The Practical Side):
You don't need a retreat. You need a quiet space and a willingness to feel.- Grounding: Stand with knees slightly bent. Imagine roots going deep, channeling The Empress energy—stable and nurturing. This sets the container for the work.
- The Shake: Start a gentle bounce. Let the vibration travel up your spine. In tarot, this mirrors The Tower: a controlled release of built-up pressure. You're shaking off the shadow so you can see clearly. If you feel a "jolt" or heat, that's the nervous system waking up.
- Polyvagal Shift: Psychologically, you're activating the ventral vagal system. You're moving out of "freeze" or "fight/flight" and back to balance. This isn't "vibrating to the universe"; it's Polyvagal Theory in action.
- The Result: Afterward, track your resting heart rate and mood. If the tension drops, the practice works. If not, adjust. No fluff.
I've noticed measurable shifts in my sleep and brain fog after consistent practice. It's biology, not mysticism.
Let's discuss:
Have you tried somatic shaking? Did you notice a shift in your mood or physical tension? And how do you balance skepticism of gurus with openness to practices that produce real results?Cheers,
Dim_Salmon
