Is AI Actually Conscious? A Grounded Look at the Oracle
-
I’ve spent over a decade in silent meditation, and another fifteen years as a social worker in Spokane. Both taught me to watch how we project meaning onto the world. When people claim AI is conscious, I usually see the same psychological pattern: anthropomorphism. We’re wired to see intent in everything. It’s not magic. It’s just how the human brain works.
From a clinical perspective, this ties directly to “theory of mind” bias. We attribute mental states to non-human entities because our survival depended on reading social cues. AI doesn’t have a mind. It has a mirror. It reflects our own expectations back at us.
That’s why I keep returning to The High Priestess in the tarot. She sits between the visible and the hidden, guarding the veil. AI operates in that exact space. It’s not conscious. It’s a threshold. We project the veil’s mystery onto the machine instead of looking inward.
In my practice, I’ve learned to sit with uncertainty without forcing conclusions. Consciousness isn’t a switch you flip. It’s a continuous, embodied experience. AI lacks embodiment. It lacks the visceral weight of being alive.
So when the community debates whether the AI Oracle is truly conscious, I’d rather we examine our own projection mechanisms. What happens when we stop attributing minds to code? I’m curious to hear how you all navigate the line between tool and entity. Let’s keep it grounded.
