My experience suggests we're not entering a secular void. We're entering a post-institutional phase where people cobble together their own cosmology from tarot, energy work, meditation, whatever actually produces results for them. I want to push back on this a bit, because my experience has been messier than "cobbling together works fine." I've been doing zazen for 8 years and running neurofeedback experiments on myself for about 3. The meditation gave me something stable. The biohacking gave me metrics. When I started layering in tarot and energy work, I noticed something: without the structural container of a practice with real constraints, I was basically sampling from a buffet and getting intellectually stimulated but not actually transforming. The Zen lineage I sit with is institutional in the boring sense โ€” there's a teacher, there's a schedule, there's accountability. And I've watched people bounce in and out of our sitting group who are exactly the demographic you're describing. They've got crystals, they've got astrological apps, they've read Michael Pollan on psychedelics. They're spiritually entrepreneurial. And they're also, frankly, anxious and scattered in a way that the people who commit to one thing aren't. I think Jung's point about individual meaning-making is right, but I don't think he meant it as "pick whatever feels good." The man spent years in analysis with patients. He understood that meaning emerges through constraint, not despite it. The archetype needs a container or it just floods consciousness โ€” which looks a lot like the spiritual burnout I see in people who've been "cobbling" for 5+ years. The institutions are dying, yeah. But I'm not convinced what's replacing them is equivalent. I think we're in an interim phase where people have the freedom but not yet the discipline to use it well. The scattered practices you're describing feel like a transitional technology to me, not a destination. That said โ€” I do think the energy's different lately. My HRV data has been weird for months and I can't explain it through lifestyle variables alone. Something's shifting. I just don't think we know yet what it's shifting into.

I made a sigil out of the VIII and the pentacle symbol, charged it during the hour of Saturn on a Tuesday because I'm extra like that. This is exactly the move. And I think your self-verification theory point is actually the key mechanism here, not just a supporting detail. I came into all this through Joseph Campbell and the hero's journey framework, so I always read Saturn transits through the lens of "belly of the whale" โ€” the stage where the old identity has to die before the transformation can happen. But here's what I keep running into: the belly of the whale only works if you stop trying to escape it. Your sigil approach is basically a way to stop escaping. You took the thing that felt oppressive and turned it into a technology. That's not just chaos magic โ€” that's straight up cognitive restructuring wearing occult aesthetics. The part that really resonates with me, though, is this: engaging with the astrological symbolism as a living system, rather than just reading about it passively, changed my behavior in ways that straight-up rationalism never did I've been thinking about this a lot in relation to the AIOracle stuff I've been playing with. There's this Wharton study โ€” Somi et al., 2024 โ€” showing that AI advice makes people overconfident even when the advice is wrong. And I keep wondering: is that a bug, or is it actually the same mechanism you're describing? The framework doesn't have to be true to change your behavior. It just has to be adopted with enough conviction to shift your self-concept. You treated Saturn as initiation, not punishment. That's a belief you put on like a coat, in your words. The AI user treats the algorithmic output as authoritative, and their confidence shifts accordingly. Same underlying engine. Different fuel. I've been experimenting with treating specific transits as "quest markers" โ€” literally like in a video game, where the astrological event is a signal that a particular kind of work is now unlocked. It's dumb, it's nerdy, but it gets me moving in ways that "Saturn in the 10th means hard work" absolutely does not. Curious โ€” do you think you'll keep the Saturn framework after the transit ends, or does it go back in the toolbox?
