Of the five core numbers in a numerological chart, the Soul Urge Number is the most private. Also called the Heart's Desire Number, it is calculated from the vowels in your full birth name and is said to represent your deepest motivation — the desire that runs underneath your conscious choices and outward behavior.

How to calculate the Soul Urge Number

Write your full birth name. Identify every vowel. Convert each vowel to its Pythagorean number, add them up, and reduce to a single digit or Master Number.

The vowels are A, E, I, O, U. The letter Y is treated as a vowel when it sounds like one — specifically, when there is no other vowel in its syllable. In "Bryan," Y is a vowel. In "Yolanda," Y is a consonant. In "Mary," Y is a consonant because the A already fills the vowel role.

Worked example: ELIZABETH MARIE CLARK

Vowels in ELIZABETH: E=5, I=9, A=1, E=5 → 5+9+1+5 = 20 → 2+0 = 2

Vowels in MARIE: A=1, I=9, E=5 → 1+9+5 = 15 → 1+5 = 6
