Nine Star Destiny — 九星術 (Kyūseijutsu in Japanese, Guseongsul in Korean) — is a destiny system based on the Lo Shu Square (洛书, the ancient 3×3 magic square) and the movement of nine symbolic stars. Unlike Western astrology, which tracks the positions of actual celestial bodies, Nine Star Destiny tracks the movement of nine *symbolic* energies through a grid. Your birth year determines your "life star," and each passing year shifts your star's position, creating an annual forecast cycle.

That maps to Star 1 (一白贪狼, Greedy Wolf). Each star carries a personality profile, compatible and incompatible stars, and favorable colors, directions, and numbers.

In practice, the formula uses the sum modulo 9, with a special rule: if the result is 0, the life star is 9. For people born before 2000, you add the full year sum and then apply specific adjustments. Modern Nine Star apps handle this automatically.

Annual flying stars (九运)

Each year, the nine stars "fly" to different positions in the Lo Shu grid. Your annual reading depends on which star occupies the center of the grid and where your life star is positioned. The system creates a personalized forecast by analyzing the interaction between your life star and the year's star configuration.

The stars follow specific movement patterns. The most common is the "post-heaven" (后天) sequence: 9 → 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5 → 6 → 7 → 8 → 9. Nakajima's approach emphasizes practical daily application: what to eat, which direction to face, when to make important decisions, all based on your current Nine Star year.

The Japanese system also includes a detailed classification of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals mapped onto the Nine Star grid, creating an even more granular reading that combines both systems.

Korea: 九星術 (Guseongsul)

In Korea, the practice is known as 九星術 (guseong-sul) and is part of the broader Korean folk divination tradition called 유사술 (yusa-sul).
