Yeah, the Seligman model is dusty, but telling people to just hack their nervous system ignores the very real cages we're sitting in. You can't rewire your way out of a situation where the environment is actively hostile.

The figure is not trapped. The figure is waiting, waiting for permission to move, waiting for someone else to untie the ropes. Seligman dogs learned the same lesson.

What I want to emphasize is the role of the body in breaking learned helplessness. Research on trauma by Bessel van der Kolk showed that the body stores the memory of powerlessness long after the mind has decided to try again. The breathwork you mention is not just a relaxation technique, it is a direct signaling mechanism to the vagus nerve that says: you are safe now.

When you regulate your breath, you are not just calming your mind. You are rewriting the body memory of helplessness. Each slow exhale sends a parasympathetic signal that contradicts the old learned response. Over time, the nervous system updates its model of the world from I cannot escape to I have resources.

Agency is not handed to you. It is reclaimed, breath by breath. The swords around you are real in the sense that they represent genuine constraints, but notice how many of them are not actually touching you. The 8 of Swords is a lesson in perception, not prison.

Your breath is the key. Use it.
