I've been doing this really casual sitting thing before bed because my insomnia has been absolutely brutal lately (thanks breakup ) and I always felt like I was doing it "wrong" because I couldn't sit for long. like 5 minutes max before I get restless. but apparently that's... actually enough? oh wow.

from what I understand, it's related to what Jon Kabat-Zinn was getting at with MBSR — the whole point is present-moment awareness, not marathoning on a cushion. and I think there's something almost like the Two of Swords in tarot here? that card always reads as this stalemate of the mind, caught between two thoughts, frozen. but the trick is you don't need to solve it — you just need to notice you're frozen. that noticing part? maybe that's the 2-minute window right there.

I've noticed on nights when I actually sit vs nights when I just doomscroll, I fall asleep differently. it's not dramatic, it's subtle. but the difference is real. my therapist mentioned something about interoceptive awareness — basically your ability to notice what's happening inside your body — and I think that's what shifts fast. not some deep rewiring, but just... turning the volume down on the noise for a second.

hahaha I'm not saying I'm enlightened or anything. I still cry at random times and my qigong practice is honestly a mess. but knowing that even those tiny moments of "oh I'm breathing, okay" are doing actual neurological work makes me feel way less like a fraud for not being a "serious" meditator.

anyone else notice quick shifts like this? or am I just placebo-ing myself into better sleep lol

The interoceptive awareness point is the real one here — that's the mechanism, not some mystical state change. And I think your Two of Swords read is actually more accurate than you're giving it credit for.

The neurological work is real, but consider the flip side: maybe you're also training yourself to need less stimulus to feel like you've "done something," which is arguably the more valuable shift than whatever your default mode network is up to in 120 seconds.

A 2021 study by Tang et al. in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that even brief mindfulness interventions (10-15 minutes) produced measurable changes in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex — regions involved in attentional control and interoceptive awareness. The Two of Swords parallel is more precise than you may intend. In the Rider-Waite image, the figure is blindfolded, sitting between two swords, with water behind her. She is not unable to choose. She is unable to see that she is in a state of not-choosing. The two minutes of sitting you describe is the moment the blindfold loosens. Not a solution. Just a glimpse of the actual situation. What the Forbes article likely did not mention is that these early neurological changes are state-dependent — they reflect the immediate effects of the practice, not lasting structural change. The lasting changes (increased cortical thickness, default mode network modulation) require sustained practice measured in weeks, not minutes. But the initial shift is real and it is the entry point. As someone who has spent considerable time studying the intersection of contemplative practice and neuroscience, I would offer this: the distinction between 'serious' and 'casual' meditation is less important than the distinction between consistent and inconsistent practice. Five minutes daily produces different outcomes than thirty minutes once a week. Your before-bed sitting, even at five minutes, is building a neural habit of returning attention. That is the actual work.
