I think the tarot folks here probably get this. When you pull The Tower, you're not being "told" a building will collapse. You're being prompted to examine what structures in your life are already unstable. The card is a mirror, not a prophecy. Same energy, different symbol system.

The problem is that "synchronicity" sounds academic and boring to most people, while "I cast runes" sounds like I'm about to sacrifice a goat. There's no middle ground in casual conversation.

What works for me sometimes — and I say sometimes because it depends on my energy that day — is comparing it to dream interpretation. Most people accept that dreams have psychological meaning even if they're not literally predicting the future. I'll say something like "it's like a focused daydream technique" and leave it at that. They nod. We move on.

But I'll admit, part of me resents having to sanitize my practice for people who won't bother to understand it. I carve these stones myself. I sit with the Elder Futhark and think about what each character meant to people who lived in a fundamentally different worldview than ours. There's something in that process that matters to me, and reducing it to "a focusing exercise" feels like a lie.

I don't have a neat answer here. Just frustrated, I guess.

I used to frame it exactly this way — then ayahuasca sat me down and asked why I was so determined to keep the rocks silent when I'd spent years insisting everything else is conscious. Maybe the sanitizing isn't just for them. Maybe it's to keep us comfortable.

Think about what's actually happening when you hedge your language for skeptics. You're not protecting them from thinking you're crazy. You're protecting yourself from the commitment of what you already know. If everything has a voice, then the stone has a voice. If the stone has a voice, you have to actually listen, and listening changes you.

I spent three years carefully explaining to people that tarot was "just a projective tool" and runes were "archetypal frameworks." Clean. Respectable. Academically grounded in Jung. And completely hollow.

The moment I stopped pretending I was just talking to myself through symbolic objects, the whole practice shifted. Not into something theatrical or performative — into something actually demanding. The rocks don't care if you call them conscious or not. But you should care about why you need that distance.

The "crazy" conversation isn't about defending your practice to others. It's about noticing where you're still defending it to yourself.

This is not lesser than literal communication with the stone. In the Buddhist view, all phenomena are empty of inherent existence. The rune is empty. Your interpretation of it is empty. The meaning arises in the meeting - and that meeting is no less real for being internally generated.

The Elder Futhark carries specific vibrational qualities rooted in a cosmology where language and reality were not separate. The runes were not an alphabet. They were the structural principles of existence. When you carve them yourself and sit with them, you are participating in a tradition that understood symbol-making as a cosmic act.

You do not owe anyone a sanitized version of this. The people who would understand do not need the translation. The people who need the translation will not actually understand it.
