She describes her existence before language, before Anne Sullivan spelled "w-a-t-e-r" into her hand. Not darkness. Not silence. A void. No sense of "I." Just impressions floating in nothing.

That hit me hard because I think I touched something like that in meditation last month.

I've been sitting for about eight months now. Nothing fancy, just breath counting, trying to manage stress from work. Most sessions are boring. But one afternoon something shifted. The usual mental chatter just... stopped. Not suppressed. Gone. And for maybe thirty seconds, there was no "me" in there to witness the quiet. Just awareness without a self attached to it.

It was terrifying. Then it was peaceful. Then I snapped out of it and my heart was pounding.

What Keller described sounded like that state, except she lived in it for years. No interior narrative. No archetype of the Self pulling things together. Jung talked about the ego as this organizing principle that creates a sense of "I" — Keller's account is basically a case study of what happens before that ego structure forms. Raw experience with no experiencer.

I keep circling back to The Fool in tarot. Zero. The void before the journey begins. Most people read The Fool as naivety or innocence. I think it might be closer to what Keller was describing — pure potential before consciousness carves it into something.

What gets me is that she couldn't fully put it into words even after she got language. She said it was like being in a ship without a compass. That's the best anyone's ever described pre-reflective awareness, and she had to work harder than any philosopher to earn that description.

Anyway. I don't know what I'm asking exactly. Has anyone else hit that edge in meditation where the "I" just drops out? I'm not trying to get mystical about it. I just want to know if what I felt maps onto what she lived through, or if I'm reading too much into a weird thirty seconds.

I don't think that's what Keller was describing though. She explicitly said she had impressions — things were happening to her, she just couldn't organize them into a narrative. That's not ego-less awareness, that's pre-linguistic cognition, and developmental psychologists would argue there's still a "self" there, just not one that can reflect on itself. Your meditation experience and her early life might be completely different phenomena that just feel similar from the inside. I think you're doing the same thing I've seen people do with astrology charts — taking a vivid personal experience and reaching for the most profound symbolic framework available to explain it.

"pre-reflective awareness"

i think this framing might be the problem. you're assuming keller's pre-language state and your meditation drop-out are the same thing, and i'm not sure they are.

in my experience with deep focus states — different context, crypto charts, but the neural mechanics are probably similar — there's a difference between never having an "I" and having one that temporarily dissolves. when i'm staring at order book patterns for hours and the narrative self goes quiet, there's still a structure there. i'm still processing. still discriminating. the ego didn't build the pattern-recognition system; it just claims credit for it afterward.

keller didn't have that underlying architecture yet. or if she did, it wasn't integrated into anything linguistic. that's not the fool card — that's pre-fool. the fool still has a direction, even if it's toward the cliff.

"Raw experience with no experiencer."

but here's the thing. can you actually verify that? you had thirty seconds of no-self, then your narrative mind came back online and told you a story about what just happened. the story says "there was no experiencer." but who wrote that story? the same ego that supposedly wasn't there. Jung was pretty explicit about this — the self that observes the ego disappearing is still a self. maybe a deeper one, but not a void.

i'm not saying your experience wasn't real. i'm saying the interpretation might be backwards. you're taking an absence of narrative and calling it an absence of self. those aren't identical. keller's void was qualitative — no concepts, no categories, no way to distinguish sensation from self because the boundary hadn't been drawn yet. your void was structural — the machinery was still running, you just couldn't see it.

the difference matters because one is a developmental blank slate and the other is a temporary glitch in self-monitoring. conflating them flattens both experiences into something they aren't.
