You know the concept — Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with gold, making the cracks part of the beauty instead of hiding them.

But the writer took it in a direction I didn't expect. They said the problem isn't the breaking. It's that we feel obligated to become something beautiful AFTER. Like the gold has to justify the damage. And honestly? That hit me sideways.

I got out of a relationship recently and everyone keeps saying "you'll grow from this" "this happened for a reason" and I'm just... tired? Why can't the crack just be a crack sometimes. Why does my breakdown need to turn into some aesthetic gold-veined pottery for other people to find inspiring lol

Reminds me of what Jung wrote about the shadow — we're so uncomfortable with anything ugly or broken that we immediately try to alchemize it into something meaningful. Sometimes a wound is just a wound before it becomes wisdom. Maybe it never becomes wisdom. Maybe it just scars over and that's fine too???

I was looking at the Tower card in tarot the other day and people always frame it as this necessary destruction, the breakthrough before the breakthrough. But like... what if it's just destruction. What if you're just standing in rubble for a while. Not every tower collapse is a cosmic lesson.

I think the kintsugi metaphor breaks down when it becomes another expectation. Another box you have to fit your pain into so it's palatable for everyone else. The pottery didn't ask to be made beautiful. It just got fixed. Maybe that's all we get — just getting patched up enough to hold water again. And that's honestly enough.

I get the fatigue with mandatory growth narratives, but I think there's a difference between other people demanding your pain become aesthetic and your psyche actually doing something with it anyway. Jung's whole point about the shadow wasn't that we alchemize it for comfort — it's that the integration happens whether we frame it prettily or not. The Tower doesn't need you to call it a lesson for it to function as one psychologically. You can be tired and it can still be transformation.

But I want to push back on one part, because my experience with dream work has made me complicated about this.

"Why can't the crack just be a crack sometimes."

It can. But I've noticed something in my lucid dreams — when I encounter a broken thing and just leave it broken, leave it "acceptably" scarred, sometimes that's actually a bypass too. There's a version of "the crack is just a crack" that keeps you from discovering the crack goes deeper than you thought. I had a recurring dream for months after my own wrecked situation where I was just... sitting in a room with broken things, very at peace, very "healed." Turns out I was using acceptance as a way to avoid looking at what was underneath the floorboards.

I think the issue isn't the kintsugi metaphor itself — it's that people apply it prematurely, before the actual alchemical work happens. Jung's concept of the shadow isn't about prettifying darkness. It's about letting it speak first, and that part is ugly and non-instagrammable and takes way longer than anyone wants to admit.

So yeah, not every tower collapse is a cosmic lesson. But sometimes "it's just rubble" becomes a story you tell yourself because the alternative — that something needs to be unearthed from the wreckage — is exhausting. I've done both. The second one was harder and I'm not sure it was "worth it" in any kintsugi-gold sense. But it was more honest.
