It’s the tarot equivalent of someone walking into a room and saying, “This is over.” My first reaction when I was doing beginner correspondences and saw Scorpio linked to Death was basically: oh no, dramatic water sign plus dramatic card, we are going to have a conversation about boundaries.

And honestly? I was right.

For me, Scorpio energy has never been about moodiness in the “I’ll give you a look” way. It’s about the stuff you refuse to look at. The old self that kept pretending it was fine. The relationship habit, the identity, the belief that if I just perform enough competence I won’t feel exposed. When Death shows up, I don’t think it’s announcing a literal funeral. I think it’s pointing at the part of me that’s already dead but still holding the steering wheel.

This is where I get a little Jung in my head, if only because I keep rereading him when I’m trying to avoid writing. The shadow isn’t just “the dark part of you.” It’s the material you’ve been outsourcing to other people, other vices, other stories. Scorpio + Death feels like the tarot version of being told: “Stop renting your feelings from someone else.”

I also think people scare themselves with the transformation language. “Death is transformation!” Sure. But transformation can just mean a bad week, a job ending, a friendship thinning out, a belief cracking. It doesn’t have to be spiritual fireworks. Sometimes it’s just Tuesday and you realize you don’t want the life you built at 19 anymore.

Crowley’s correspondences can be precise, but I find them a little... overbearing. Like the deck is wearing a cape. I prefer the looser, almost Watts-ish vibe: the self is not a fixed object, so “death” is just the self getting less solid. That’s less sexy, maybe, but it lands harder for me.

So now when Scorpio season starts and Death pops up in a spread, I’m less likely to panic. I’m more likely to ask: what am I pretending has already died?

And if the answer is “my need to be taken seriously,” well. That’s a whole card spread.
