I’m a construction worker in Bozeman, and I also train to be a therapist, so I’m wired to ask: what is this actually doing?

I bought small crystals in bulk for an autumn altar. Tiny amethyst, black tourmaline, a few clear quartz points, some hematite. Total cost was less than a sandwich. The point wasn’t luxury. It was ritual. I wanted something I could touch, arrange, and look at without pulling up an AIOracle app.

Here’s where it gets interesting for me. In therapy, we talk about ritual and repetition as ways to create safety and meaning. A person can light a candle, set a small altar, and shift from “racing mind” into something slower. That’s not magic in the way the internet sells it. It’s closer to Jung talking about symbols doing inner work. The symbol isn’t the cure. The symbol is the hook.

Tarot fits that too. Autumn is not just leaves falling; it’s the Hermit card energy. Withdrawal. Inner audit. “What do I keep? What do I let go of?” When I put crystals on the altar, I’m not doing “crystal medicine.” I’m doing a physical prompt. Amethyst: calm. Hematite: grounding. Tourmaline: boundary. If I believe that, it can help. If I start believing the stone itself is responsible for my stability, then I’ve outsourced the work.

That’s where I get blunt. Spiritual practice can complement therapy when it gives you a container for feeling, a symbol to return to, and a way to notice your own patterns. It hinders therapy when it becomes magical thinking that avoids discomfort. “I’ll just clear the room with sage” is not a substitute for sitting with grief. “The moon is in Scorpio, so my anxiety is not real” is also not a substitute for evidence-based practice.

I’m also cautious about psychedelics being oversold. I don’t think a crystal altar is the same as a psilocybin session, but I do think both get sold as shortcuts. One with pretty stones, one with a white coat and a journal. The real work is still integration.

So yeah, I bought the bulk crystals. They’re on my desk now. They look stupid and beautiful. I’m not healing from them. I’m using them to remember that I can build a small world where I’m allowed to be quiet.
