My first reaction was professional. My second was personal.

It reminded me of ancestor veneration, except the incense was a server rack and the ritual was a chat prompt. In Chengdu, I grew up around the idea that family memory doesn’t end when a person dies. It moves into food, stories, festivals, and the way you place a bowl for the absent. A digital altar can do that. It also blurs the line between remembering and re-contacting.

I’m 44, non-binary, and I live alone in Chengdu, so a simulated relative voice hits me harder than it should. From meditation, I know how fast the mind grabs onto a familiar face. A voice model that says “be careful, don’t work too hard” can feel like comfort. It can also become a loop. I think Jung would probably call this shadow material: the parts of grief we don’t want to look at get projected into the machine. The AI doesn’t have to be a ghost. It just has to be good enough to make us believe the ghost is there.

Tarot symbolism makes this less abstract. The Death card isn’t just death; it’s endings that make space for something else. A digital ancestor tool can be a useful threshold object if it helps a family close a story. If it becomes a permanent comfort patch, it can keep grief suspended instead of letting it move.

"good enough to make us believe the ghost is there" — I agree, because after my mom died, I kept replaying her voice notes and nearly mistook my own relief for her.
