I’m a mechanic who works with her hands, lives in a small town, and has spent way too many nights staring at the ceiling while my chest feels like it’s being tightened with a ratchet.

A few years ago, I started doing self Reiki for anxiety because it was the only practice that didn’t make me feel like I had to choose between “spiritual” and “real.” I’d wash my hands, light a candle, set a selenite near the stove, and place one hand over my heart and one over my belly. No incantations. No grand claims. Just heat, breath, and the quiet instruction to stay.

At first, it felt like I was performing calm for no one. My brain kept arguing: this won’t work, you’re just a person in a work shirt doing finger things. But I kept going. What surprised me was that the anxiety didn’t always disappear. Sometimes it just... changed shape. The panic that used to hit like a slammed garage door started slowing down, turning into a tight knot I could name. That mattered.

I think part of it is that I stopped treating Reiki as a cure and started treating it as a ritual container. In ACT terms, I’m not trying to erase the anxious thought; I’m trying to make some space around it. The hand placement becomes a cue to my nervous system: you’re safe enough to feel this. The candle becomes a focal point. The breath becomes the anchor. It’s not magic in a literal sense, but it’s symbolic in a way that works on me.

Tarot has been weirdly helpful here too. The Moon card used to scare me — all that fog, the wolf, the dog, the crayfish coming out of water. I used to read it as “something is off” and get more anxious. Now I see it as a reminder that anxiety often lives in the part of me I don’t understand yet. It’s not always a signal to fix; sometimes it’s a signal to stop and look.

The Hanged Man gets me too. That suspended, upside-down pause. When I’m in a spiral, I don’t need more productivity. I need to hang there long enough for the story to loosen.

I still have bad days. Reiki self healing isn’t a magic off switch, and I’m not saying it replaces therapy or medication. But it gives me a doorway back to my body when my mind is racing. It’s my inner alchemy: lead, grease, fear, and heat, slowly becoming something I can use.

If you’re skeptical, that’s fine. Try it as a five-minute experiment. Place your hands where your chest or belly feels tight. Breathe. See if the sensation changes even a little. For me, that little shift is where the real healing starts.
