I’m a 20-year-old software engineer in Manchester who draws queer mythic stuff for fun and treats my own nervous system like a very moody collaborator.

For me, reiki self-healing isn’t magic in the “zap, now I’m cured” sense. It’s more like a slow, embodied prompt. I usually do it after a long day when my chest feels tight and my brain is doing that thing where it keeps rerunning the same argument. I sit, breathe, and put my hands where the tension is: throat, heart, lower belly. Sometimes I just rest them on my knees. I don’t force a feeling. I just let the body report back.

What surprised me is how much it works like a creative ritual. I make a small altar-ish setup: a candle, a weird sketch, a tarot card pulled that morning. That last bit matters more than I expected. The card isn’t a prediction; it’s a mirror. If I pull The High Priestess, I’m more likely to sit with the quiet, unknown thing in me. If it’s the Ten of Cups, I’m reminded that I’m allowed to want tenderness without earning it. It gives my attention a shape.

Psychologically, I think this is why it can feel real. We’re not just “energy healing”; we’re giving the nervous system a cue that it’s safe to pause. Jung talked about the unconscious pressing in through symbols, and I get that. My body is full of symbols. A tight jaw is a message. A hot face is a message. Reiki self-practice gives me a way to answer without immediately fixing, judging, or escaping.

Astrologically, I also notice timing. When the Moon is in Cancer, my self-reiki feels more emotional, more womb-heavy, more “why does everything hurt in the chest.” When it’s in Virgo, it’s practical, almost diagnostic. I don’t need it to be literal for that pattern to be useful. It just tells me how to meet myself that day.

If you’re thinking about trying it, keep it small. Five minutes. No grand claims. Just hands, breath, and a little permission to be a person who needs care. For me, that’s enough.
