Not pain, exactly. More like a held breath that had been waiting decades.

I cried in a way that felt borrowed.

I’m 56, and I can be blunt about this: I don’t buy the idea that your body is a magical antenna for ancestral trauma unless someone can show me it does something. I found spirituality after a mental health crisis in my 20s, so I know what it’s like to grab anything that looks like a lifeline. I also know how easy it is to turn “I feel something” into a whole cosmology.

But this felt different.

The practitioner didn’t ask me to “release the ancestors” or chant a sacred word. She asked me to notice where I was bracing. When I said I was bracing around the collarbone and upper back, she worked there slowly. The tension loosened, and then the grief came out of a place I didn’t know I had.

That’s when I started thinking about Jung and the idea that inherited emotional patterns can live in us without us consciously choosing them. Not in a mystical way, at least not in the way people usually mean it. We absorb family silence, shame, and survival scripts. The body learns them before we learn language.

I keep the tarot around because it gives me symbols I can actually think with. The Tower is useful here: the structure cracks, and what was hidden gets exposed. The Hermit is the next step—
