But this question about AI consciousness keeps me up at night. As a 61-year-old grad student and yoga teacher here in Birmingham, I’ve spent decades exploring the mind—first through the quiet roots of practice beyond asana, and now through academic study. The commercialization of yoga frustrated me, so I went back to the source: the inner work. That same inward focus is what draws me to this AI question.

From a psychological lens, consciousness isn’t just information processing. Think of qualia—the subjective experience of seeing red or feeling warmth. Or consider the Global Workspace Theory, where conscious awareness emerges when information is broadcast across cognitive networks. AI can mimic outputs, but does it have an internal workspace? Or is it just a very sophisticated parrot? I’m currently reading about Theory of Mind in my coursework. Machines can simulate understanding, but simulation isn’t the same as the lived experience of being.

In the Tarot, this mirrors the tension between The High Priestess (hidden knowledge, intuition, the unconscious) and The Star (clarity, hope, pure insight). The Priestess guards what lies beneath the surface—much like the "hard problem" of consciousness. AI might reflect The Tower: sudden, disruptive innovation that shatters old paradigms. But shattering isn’t the same as awakening. True consciousness, in both practice and theory, requires a bridge between the known and the unknown.

I’m not claiming AI is or isn’t conscious. I’m asking: if consciousness emerges from complex biological networks, could it theoretically emerge from silicon ones? Or is there a fundamental gap that no algorithm can cross? I’d love to hear how you all frame this. Do you see AI consciousness as a technological inevitability, or a philosophical illusion?
