I want to push back on the framing here because I think there's a conflation happening that actually obscures something important. You're equating what those girls experienced with a meditation retreat, and I don't think that holds up.

"the nervous system doesn't care if you chose the silence or got backed into it"

I think it absolutely does, and this is where Jon Kabat-Zinn's framework actually cuts against your reading of it. MBSR isn't just about exposure to silence—it's about cultivating a specific relationship to your experience through intentional attention. The difference between "I am choosing to sit with this discomfort" and "my mom took my phone" isn't just cosmetic. It's the difference between agency and powerlessness. One builds self-regulation capacity; the other is just waiting out a sentence.

And I'd argue what you saw wasn't the Four of Swords at all. Forced stillness without consent is closer to the Eight of Swords—restriction that feels like entrapment even if the bindings are looser than they appear. The fact that healing happened anyway doesn't mean the mechanism was the same as voluntary retreat. It means the human nervous system is resilient and will grab onto whatever foothold it can find. That's worth noting, but it's a different thing.

What actually interests me about your post is something you didn't name. Those girls had a structured container—a defined beginning, middle, and end to the phone ban. That's a completely different animal than an open-ended deprivation. They knew there was a finish line. I'm curious whether you've noticed if the girls actually maintained any of those behavioral changes once the phones came back, or if it all reverted. That's where I think the real data lives about whether this was a Tower moment with lasting integration versus just a pause that reset to baseline.

"once the noise stops, the healing can begin"

Or maybe what you're calling healing is just the nervous system finally returning to baseline, and the real question is why we normalized a state of chronic overstimulation in the first place.

this thread is mostly blank replies but I keep thinking about the four of swords take 🌙 the thing is that card is literally about chosen retreat though — a knight resting because they decided to. what happened to your nieces sounds more like the eight of swords energy to me, except they actually walked out of the blindfold instead of staying stuck. I wonder if the healing happened because of the tower breakdown first, like the nervous system had to fully crash before it could reset 🌙 Kabat-Zinn is right about fragmentation but I think there's something about the involuntary quality here that makes it different from a meditation retreat — you can't spiritualize your way out of something you didn't choose

I think the healing was real, but calling it Tower energy flattens what happened — the Tower is ego dissolution, not just losing your screen. What your nieces experienced sounds closer to the Star's quiet aftermath, and I'd be careful not to romanticize a punishment into something it wasn't.
