Here’s Why Your Practice Feels Like a Chore.

Look, if you’re treating mindfulness like a 20-minute tax you have to file before you can actually live, you’re doing it wrong. I spent years rigidly clocking out at my mat and sitting on a zafu like it was penance. I’m a yoga teacher in Bozeman now, and I’m completely done with the wellness-industrial complex selling us "self-care" as another item on a fucking grocery list. The roots of this work don’t live in a scheduled app notification. They live in how you load the dishwasher.

Formal sitting is fine for building focus, sure. But when it becomes a rigid ritual, it starts feeding right into cognitive dissonance. You’re telling your nervous system to be present on the cushion, then immediately switching back to frantic, scattered mode the second the timer dings. That’s not integration. That’s compartmentalization.

Carl Jung called it the process of individuation—actually weaving the fragmented parts of your psyche into a coherent whole instead of just meditating them into a neat little box. I’ve seen it play out in tarot spreads constantly. You pull The Hermit when you’re obsessing over isolated practice. It’s all introspection, withdrawal, and "me time." But the work only alchemizes when you stop treating it like a separate event and let it bleed into the mundane. The texture of the day becomes the practice. Washing your hands, waiting in line, feeling the Montana wind slap your face—that’s the real work.

I’m not saying ditch the cushion entirely. I’m saying stop treating it like a separate department in your life. If your practice only happens when you’re cross-legged and ignoring the world, you’re not cultivating awareness. You’re building a bunker. Bring it out into the street. Let it get dirty. That’s how you actually change your life instead of just checking a box.
