Half the folks who show up to my breathwork circle at the community center here in Bozeman are just terrified. Not of ghosts or curses. Of their own lives spinning out of control. And that’s exactly why they’re drawn to this stuff.

I read about compensatory control theory a while back. The basic idea, backed by actual research from Justin Whitson and Adam Galinsky, is that when our sense of personal agency drops, our brains desperately latch onto something else that feels orderly. God, fate, cosmic law, a tarot spread. It’s psychological infrastructure. We build it because the alternative—staring into pure chaos—is paralyzing.

Jung nailed the architecture of this, honestly. He talked about how we project archetypes onto the unknown just to make it digestible. When I started doing breathwork to keep myself from short-circuiting as a stay-at-home parent, I noticed the same pattern. The moment I stopped trying to force the breath and just let the exhale happen, the panic dropped. That’s not mysticism. That’s nervous system regulation. But sure, call it "grounding." Call it "earth element work." Words are just containers.

Tarot gets this perfectly. The Chariot is all about that desperate grip on the reins, trying to force direction. The Moon is the raw, unfiltered anxiety of the unknown. Most of us spend our lives trying to ride the Chariot through the Moon, and when we crash, we turn to spiritual practice to glue the pieces back together. Is that fake? Not really. It’s functional. Belief is scaffolding. You don’t stop using a ladder just because you know how gravity works.

So does knowing the psychology strip the magic? In my experience, no. It just means we stop pretending we’re talking to the universe and start admitting we’re talking to our own wiring. That’s not cynical. It’s honest. If you need the framework to keep from falling apart, use it. Just don’t act surprised when the ritual works because your brain finally decided to stop screaming.

What’s your take? Does naming the mechanism kill the vibe for you, or do you think the "supernatural" is just the part of us that refuses to be mapped?
