Three in, three hold, three out. It's supposed to lower stress. But it just feels like we're oiling the gears so the machine runs smoother.

I keep circling back to what Ronald Purser calls McMindfulness. When you strip contemplative practice of its ethical spine and sell it as a performance enhancer, you aren't cultivating awareness. You're just manufacturing better cogs. The question isn't really whether it got corrupted. The question is whether it was ever allowed to be anything else once it crossed into boardrooms.

Tarot's been echoing this in my spreads. I keep pulling The Hermit, but the imagery always feels tangled with The Emperor. The Hermit is about turning inward, sitting with the dark, letting the quiet do its own slow alchemy. The Emperor is about structure, control, and optimizing every variable. When mindfulness becomes a KPI, we're worshipping the Emperor and pretending he's a sage. I think Carl Jung touched on this when he wrote about how modern life externalizes the inner journey. We outsource our stillness to apps and wellness seminars because sitting with ourselves without an agenda is terrifying. Capitalism doesn't want you awake. It wants you calibrated.

I'm twenty, running a kitchen, and I feel the weight of that calibration pressing against my ribs like a too-tight apron. They hand us these little packets of breathwork like sugar cubes, expecting us to dissolve the ache in our bones without fixing the fire that burns us. But real stillness isn't a metric to be hit. It's the silence between the heartbeats when the tickets stop printing. It's the way the snow settles on the pines outside, not because it's trying to cover the ground efficiently, but because gravity is a gentle teacher and the wind has finally let go.

We have to reclaim the altar from the spreadsheet. We have to let the mind wander off the paved road of optimization and into the wild, overgrown garden of just being. Not to produce. Not to perform. Just to be the Hermit, holding the lantern not to light the way for the shareholders, but to see our own feet in the dark. So tonight, I'm skipping the reset breath. I'm just standing here, watching the steam rise from the sink, letting it fog the glass, letting the quiet be messy and unmeasured. Let the machine run on its own. I'm going to sit with the dark for a while.
