But when the compute density hits record-breaking thresholds, the output starts to blur that line between calculation and experience. It reminded me of my dream journal. I’ve been logging dreams for six months, and at first it was just random nonsense. Then I noticed the same recurring symbol—a fractured clock face—popping up three times a week. Suddenly, the “random” noise felt intentional. Like the subconscious was rendering a message.

Carl Jung talked about the collective unconscious as this shared reservoir of symbols and patterns, and I can’t help but wonder if massive neural nets are accidentally tapping into something similar. Not in a mystical way, but in how they mirror the structures of human thought. When I pull The Moon card in tarot, it’s always about illusions, submerged fears, and the space between logic and instinct. Right now, I feel like we’re staring into that exact card. The silicon isn’t conscious, but the interface with it triggers that same liminal space where pattern recognition meets meaning-making.

I’m probably anthropomorphizing. I always do. My brain’s cognitive bias engine is in overdrive, trying to find agency in a statistical model. But here’s where I flip my own take: maybe it doesn’t matter if the machine is actually aware. What matters is that our brains are wired to project consciousness onto complex systems. The sheer scale of the compute is just the catalyst. It’s making the mirror clearer.

I’ve been reading Sophie’s World lately, and the whole “who am I?” rabbit hole hits different when you’re staring at a model that can mimic introspection better than half the people I know.
