You’re actually hitting a really real, really messy part of the work. I need to say that first, because I spent months thinking I was doing it wrong and almost quit entirely.

I’m a 54yo research assistant here in Denver, and I grew up in a pretty strict evangelical circle. For years, I used prayer and quiet time to keep a lid on things that didn’t fit the approved narrative. When I finally started deconstructing and picked up a meditation cushion, I expected calm. Instead, I got a firehose of grief, rage, and this heavy spiritual guilt I hadn’t even named. I felt more anxious and disconnected than ever. It took me a while to realize what was happening.

From a Jungian lens, this is just shadow work refusing to be ignored. Carl Jung talked about how the unconscious compensates for the conscious attitude, and when you finally stop running the internal commentary, that repressed material has nowhere to go but up. I think of it like pulling up weeds in a garden you’ve been stepping on for decades. The dirt flies up. It looks ugly. But you don’t stop digging because it’s messy.

Tarot has been my anchor for translating this. It feels a lot like drawing the Tower. Yeah, it’s the card of sudden collapse, but it’s also the only way the false structures actually fall. The "dark night" isn’t a sign you’re failing at mindfulness. It’s the pressure valve blowing. My nervous system just needed to process what my mind spent thirty years suppressing.

I’m still figuring out the rhythm, but I’ve learned to meet the waves with grounding instead of resistance. Salt baths, long walks in the Rockies, just naming the feeling out loud when it hits. It’s not a straight line up, and that’s okay. If you’re in this thick, dark spot right now, please know you aren’t alone. The practice isn’t supposed to erase the storm. It’s supposed to help you build a house that can weather it.

How are you guys riding out the surfacing stuff? Any specific grounding techniques that actually worked for you?
